Many older people not interested in mobile phone technology

According to a recent report many older people in the UK have little or no interest in smart phone technology, with only one in twenty people aged over sixty five having a smart phone.

For many people in the UK smart phones have revolutionized their lives in many ways. However, whilst younger people in their teens, twenties and thirties may be impressed by smart phones technology it appears that older people have little to no interest in this technology.

Figures show that only one in twenty of those aged sixty five and over owns a smart phone, which compares to one in four of the population as a whole. These smart phones offer a range of exciting features and advanced functions but it seems that older consumers have not interest in these functions.

This will not come as a great surprise to many people given that recent research that was conducted by Cambridge University showed that more than fifty percent of those aged fifty and over were daunted about using an electronic product that was new to them. A Cambridge official said: “It is critical that all manufacturers of electronics goods, particularly mobile phones, consider the needs of older users when designing new products. There is a real opportunity to address this anxiety and create something that is both stylish and easy to use.”

Ofcom research has shown that amongst the over sixty five age group thirty nine percent only use their mobiles for making phone calls and fifty five percent use text messaging.
