Whilst social networking sites are still extremely popular there seems to be a change emerging in the way that users access these sites, with more and more people using their mobile phones to access social networking sites.

There is no doubt that social networking sites have become extremely popular in a relatively short space of time, with sites such as Twitter and Facebook having become household names very quickly. Many people use social networking sites on a daily basis, and in particular these sites are popular with younger people and celebrities who seem to want the rest of the world to know what they have been up to and what they are doing.

At one time those that were using social networking sites were doing so mainly from their homes, with millions of people each evening sitting at their desktop PCs or laptops in their living rooms or bedrooms, where they could check on friends and loved ones, send messages, and enter posts. However, this trend has started to change according to recent reports.

Reports have shown that an increasing number of people are now accessing social networking sites using their mobile phones rather than through their computers, and figures show that nearly five million people accessed Twitter through their mobile phones in January of this year. This reflects an increase of 347 percent. There has also been a sharp increase in the number of people using Facebook from their mobile phones, reflecting an increase of 112 percent compared to the same period last year.

The research was carried out by ComScore, and an official from the company said: “Social media is a natural sweet spot for mobile since mobile devices are at the centre of how people communicate with their circle of friends, whether by phone, text, email, or, increasingly, accessing social networking sites via a mobile browser.”
