It has been claimed in a recent report that festival goers that are attending the forthcoming Glastonbury Festival should be able to charge their mobiles using a t-shirt.
Many people who go to festivals are keen to take their mobile phones, not only to be able to keep in touch with others whilst they are enjoying the event but also to take videos and photos whilst they are there. However, in the past many people have struggled to keep their phones going for the duration of the festival because the charge runs out.
However, this year festival goers may be able to enjoy a novel way to charge their mobiles – by using just their t-shirts! The mobile phone company Orange is said to have launched a T-shirt which allows revellers to use the noise of the festival music to charge their phones.
The technology used for the innovative system is the same as that being used in hi-fi systems, called “piezoelectric film”. This is able to turn the vibrations from the music into electrical voltage and its thin design means that it can be woven into t-shirts.
Unfortunately the t-shirt does not gain a huge amount of energy and in order to get the most from it festival goers would need to stand alarmingly close to the speakers, which could result in a charged phone along with a perforated eardrum! Officials have said that the amount of energy stored over the weekend “should be enough to recharge a smartphone, once, if you’re lucky.”
