The release date for the new Xperia Play as well as details of its software partners have recently been announced by Equipment manufacturer Sony Ericsson.

The PlayStation Portable range from Sony has recently been seeing preparations for an addition to its current line following an announcement by the Japanese equipment manufacturer of the released of a new device which is being called the Next Generation Portable (NGP), which will succeed the Sony PSP.

The formal announcement by Sony Ericsson of a March 2011 release date for the new Xperia Play or the PlayStation phone as it is also known was made during an event before the opening of the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona after many months of images being leaked, rumours and speculation.

When it is released the new Xperia Play will be using the latest Android 2.3 Gingerbread mobile operating system according to the announcement made by Sony Ericsson. With the release date set for early spring it was also confirmed that the first market to receive the new devices will be the US, with the mobile network provider Verizon Wireless signing an exclusive partnership deal.

So far the information on Sony’s launch has been a little limited with no pricing announced for any of the markets, although it has been announced that the PlayStation Store, which allows users to download and purchase games is not expected to have the device available until later in 2011.

Sony Ericsson advised that software for the new device will include titles from Namco Bandai, Gameloft, Electronic Arts, PopCap and Glu Mobile. According to the manufacturer titles like Dead Space, Guitar Hero and Battlefield will soon be available for the new device and will be playable in HD at 60fps.
